GIGABYTE GA686LX mainboard onboard IDE controller w/ Intel 440LX chipset and lar
Problem:
The Gigabyte GA686LX mainboard detects and correctly adds large (approx 20gb) disks in Award bios setup, but does not correctly reports this to operating systems. However, when the operating system has loaded its drivers it will mostly bne able to use the disk as if it was correctly reported by bios (at least NT4, Linux etc. will).

Solution:
Buy a new motherboard or a controller that handles disks of this size.
Unsolvable by this point and will probably never be solvable.

Linux is able to boot with LILO and Linear option on (carefully read docs...), just set bios settings to whatever and pass disk geometry to kernel via LILO.
