RH7.3: ProFTPD extremely slow to list directories, timeout problems
Problem:
When trying to list even small directories, the clients time out after receiving 0 bytes from the server. Upgrades to newer RPM versions did not solve the problem.
 
Solution:
Manually downloaded, compiled and installed proftpd-1.2.9.tar.gz from http://www.proftpd.org

Note that configuration and binary directories, as well as default settings are slightly different from the RPM distribution, so you will have to edit things manually to get it working.
